Akshay Kumar’s film ‘Joker’ to have aliens

Shirish Kunder’s film Joker with Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha will have aliens. Yes, that’s the buzz in the tinsel town.

As the film will reportedly be made by using 3D technology, the makers are now planning to introduce the extraterrestrial element in the film. So, probably an alien will be shown talking to Akshay. There could also be a UFO. It’s heard that Shirish is making the film keeping kids in mind. For the film, a huge set of NASA will also be constructed.

As a source tells a tabloid, “The biggest attractions of the film would be the special effects and use of 3D technology to show Akshay's interaction with an alien.” Shirish too has confirmed this news.

In fact, Joker has many international technicians working on its SFX. The movie made on a huge budget is going to be a 3D extravaganza, but the wait for it is going to be long. It will hit the screens next year only.

Will Patiala House mark bullish turn for Akshay?

After a disappointing last year when most of his films saw a bearish turn at the box-office, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is hoping that his first release of the year, cricket based family-drama 'Patiala House', witnesses a bullish trend in the movie business. The film is releasing Friday. Directed by Nikhil Advani and jointly produced and distributed by Hari Om Productions, T-series and People Tree Films Credence Motion Pictures, 'Patiala House' shows how difficult it is for a Sikh boy, played by Akshay, in a patriarchal set up to fulfill his dreams.

And as they say behind every successful man there is a woman and something similar happens to this boy after he meets a girl, Anushka Sharma, who gives him the strength to stand up for what he believes in.

Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Indian rapper and hip hop singer Hard Kaur and Prem Chopra completes Akshay's family in the movie. The story revolves around the Kahlon family, who has been living in Southall, London for the past four generations. It is ruled by autocratic and stubborn Bauji played by Rishi.

Since he is the head of the family, others have no choice but to adhere to what he says. Scarred by a racial incident that took place 20 years ago, which led to the murder of his mentor and guardian Saini, Bauji hates the British and everything that the country and its people stood for.

The dilemma, however, is that his son Parghat Singh Kahlon aka Gattu (Akshay) wants to be a cricketer and play for the British cricket team. But Gattu doesn't have the courage to stand up to his father therefore drops the idea.

Then enters Simran (Anushka) in Gattu's life and brings in both courage and hope to fulfil his long cherished dream.

Akshay's role in Patiala House is said to be inspired by England cricket team's Sikh member Monty Singh Panesar, the first Sikh to join England cricket team and the spinner is the crowds' favourite.

Panesar's parents migrated to London from Punjab.

Made with an approximate budget of Rs.21 crore, the film has been shot in Mumbai and places like Southall, Middlesex, Trent Bridge, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

Ian Botham, former England test cricketer and captain, makes his Bollywood debut with a cameo appearance in Patiala House.

Music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy compositions also make Patiala House an entertaining album. Music buffs are already dancing to the tunes of hit Punjabi song Laung da Lashkara sung by Jasbir Jassi.

Post Singh Is Kinng Akshay's only hit has been Housefull. So, the star is banking heavily on this film to give him a hit after a string of duds last year - Tees Maar Khan, Action Replayy and Khatta Meetha.

Along with Patiala House, Ashiqui.in and choreographer Ganesh Acharya's production venture Angel will also hit the screens Friday.

Angel, a love story between a boy and a handicapped girl, is the debut movie of Sanjay Dutt's nephew Nilesh Sahay and actress Sheila Sharma's daughter Madalta.

Ashiqui.in will also introduce new faces Ishaan Manhas and Ankita Shrivastava. The film is about two people - Cyrus and April - who chat online and become closer without revealing their true identities.

First look of Akshay Kumar in 'Thank You'

Husbands will be sorry… Wives say thank you - this is what the poster of the film Thank You says. Directed by Anees Bazmee, the film is an out-and-out comedy starring Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Irrfan Khan, Celina Jaitley, Sunil Shetty and Rimi Sen. Akshay says I don't produce films for money:

Actor-producer Akshay Kumar, who sounded a bit guarded about the fate of his forthcoming film Patiala House, said he doesn't produce films to make money. "I don't produce films for money. I make those films, which I personally want to make. I don't know the fate of 'Patiala House' but I am very happy to be a part of it and I have enjoyed working in it. I am not worried whether I would make money from it or not," Akshay told reporters at the music launch of Patiala House at Whistling Woods.

"Today, I am in a position where returns don't bother me much... I only think that what new I can offer to my audience," he added.

The actor mentioned that none of the films from his Hari Om Productions has upset him or his distributor so far commercially. "I have produced eight films so far and none of them were unsuccessful commercially, and neither my distributors had to suffer any losses," said Akshay.

Akhay maintains that actors like him, Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan cannot venture for films like Udaan or Tere Bin Laden because high box office returns are expected from their films.

"I have seen the business of these kinds of films. I go and watch every film; I understand what the audience wants. When a person like me or Shah Rukh or Salman do a film, we have to collect a certain amount of money in the box office so that the distributors and exhibitors get their money back."

"So we cannot do this kind of films because there is a very niche audience for such kind of cinema. These films make a maximum of Rs 8 crore. Commercial cinema makes business of Rs 70 crore. Films like Dabaang make Rs 140 crore. So you have to make such kind of films," said Akshay.

He however believes that in the near future, films like Udaan would cater to a maximum audience.

"A film like Udaan has a certain kind of audience who would go and watch them. Maybe as time progress, more people would start watching these kinds of films. In around four years, people would watch only this kind of cinema," said Akshay.

After TMK, Akshay, Farah reunite for Joker

The trio of Akshay Kumar, Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder are coming together again for their next 3D film Joker after Tees Maar Khan, which has garnered mixed response at the box office. While Akshay Kumar will stay on to be the central protagonist, Farah and Shirish would switch roles in their next outing. Farah will be handling the production department while her husband Shirish would be calling the shots as a director.

"We will begin work on Joker in January. We are already through with the ground work and it is time to start the principal shoot. The film will be made in 3D," Farah told PTI.

Joker stars Sonakshi Sinha opposite Akshay Kumar and is a joint production of Farah-Shirish's Three's Company and Akshay's 'Hari Om Entertainment Co'.

"It should be a good experience to work with the same team after Tees Maar Khan. I have always believed that you should enjoy the filmmaking process instead of worrying about the fate of a film," Farah added.

The verdict is still out on Tees Maar Khan. Despite receiving a record opening at the box office, the reviews have not been too favourable for the movie but Farah says she will continue producing her films in near future.

"The films that we are making now are for our kids. It is also for their secure future. Till you don't have kids, you tell people that 'Ok, pay me whatever that you may want to.' But then not anymore when you have responsibilities of your own."

Once Joker would be through, the next production will see Farah getting back behind the camera and begin her next directorial outing.

"Not many production houses can boast of two in-house directors. This way we don't have to rely upon outside directors to make films for us. Shirish and I can take turns. All we are looking for now are some great scripts to get us rolling."

Meanwhile plans are being put together to kick start the shoot of Joker in January 2011.

"Our first schedule would begin on 24th January. After that the next schedule would take place in April-May time frame. Yet again we would be going to Malshej for the film's shoot."

TMK movie collects Rs 375 mn in opening weekend

Tees Maar Khan, despite its ordinary merits and reports, makes the most of the Christmas weekend. Amply aided by its item number Sheela ki Jawani…. It takes tremendous opening at the box office; maintaining steady figures on Friday and Saturday at around Rs 130 million each. It registers a marginal drop on Sunday with Rs 117.5 million. While the weekend collections total up to Rs 375 million, the film starts a drastic slide as the new week begins with a drop in collections by more than 50 per cent.

Meanwhile, animation live action film Toonpur Ka Superhero fails to attract even kids, and Rajshri's blend of traditional family fare cum contemporary - Isi Life Mein- suffers on account of lack of face value and promotion. Both films fare poorly with no prospects any more.

Having opened to poor response, the three nondescript films released last week, Kaalo, 332 Mumbai To India and Payback join the also ran list with Mirch joining in despite ample appreciation from media as well as public.

No Problem has its share of problems at the box office adding just another Rs 74 million to its first week tally. In its two week of run, the movie has collected Rs 294 million.

Cashing in on open field, Band Baaja Baaraat managed to sustain through its second week and collected Rs 85 million, thereby taking the tally to Rs 185 million for two weeks. However, the film runs out of steam and is out of contention for another week.

Tees maar khan is remake of an Italian comedy film

The similarities are startling! Tees Maar Khan (TMK), Farah Khan’s latest film starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif is a remake of an Italian comedy film starring Peter Sellers. In director Vittorio De Sica’s 1966 comedy film After The Fox, Peter Sellers plays the clever con man called Fox. He has three bumbling sidekicks and plans to smuggle looted gold into Europe by pretending as a film director.

In Tees Maar Khan, Akshay too plays a clever connie called Tees Maar Khan. He has three subordinates, all goofballs. Akshay also pretends to be the director of a film to rob a train.

The similarities are truly astounding. We hear that Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder have made a lot of changes in the script to Indianize the plot. But the fact remains that TMK is a remake of After the Fox and Farah Khan too has admitted it.

She says the plot of TMK is the same as that of ‘After the Fox’ but there are many changes as well.
