That's why we use style tags to set a default font (yes, even in text areas) or fixed margins. If the W3 gives us the tools, then why should the browser render them void? That just makes no sense.
Safari is implementing a CSS3 feature with resizeable text areas. Apart from that, if your site design relies on fixed font sizes and text area sizes, they'll just break when the user Command-+/-'s the page. It will only break your site design if your site design is badly designed in the first place.
If you're worried about text areas overflowing other page elements then you can still use max-width and max-height to restrict growth and/or the overflow attribute so that scroll bars get introduced.
As one person pointed out in this thread, see the two arrows up ad down on the first line of the toolbar in this very textarea you type in to. It's very useful with long posts. That's why expandable text areas are a good idea.
It's actually not hard to do either. Look at http://www.aegisdesign.co.uk/examples/textarea/textexample.html and view the source for a simple example.
I'd disagree that designers should be making text areas 100% wide though. I've a 2560 wide screen. That'd be silly. Letting users on the other hand size it themselves and giving designers the tools to accommodate resizing is the way to go.
That's the most ridiculous statement I've read in this thread so far - and there are quite a few.
It's called the 'semantic web'. You may want to look it up. Decent web designers have been designing this way for some time where they can and the W3 want everyone to go this way.
The problem is of course with any of these new W3 features is that Microsoft have barely reached the basics in the CSS 2.1 standard yet in IE7. The chances of them supporting CSS3 anytime soon are slim. That means we'll still as designers have to support the older standards and only enlightened Firefox/Safari based designers will add on CSS3 based features should they prove compatible with IE7 and even IE6.

so it seem that everybody is jumping on this cloud bandwagon. just wondering if having web based operating systems and file storage will slow down broadband internet speed?
is that a concern? honestly i'd rather have faster internet, if that's the choice.
could somebody tell me more about this?
thanks.

Yeah...but doesn't Retrospect (http://www.dantz.com/en/products/mac_desktop/index.dtml) do the same thing but better? For $100, you'd expect so. This is a thread about free tools and SilverKeeper is one of them.

Why not? The USA for example has only 4 million miles of roads. A car with driver + passenger + some decent equipment should be able to map say 10 miles per hour, at a cost of $50 per hour. 200 cars for a year, that's 20 million dollars. And then you have a database that you can sell, and that you can use everywhere. Then write an iPhone app that lets users make corrections, lets businesses add their locations etc. and you are ready.
That would be great!
Missed their chance when Apple didn't approve the improved Google maps app the first time it was available. Now it has improved even more while Maps.app has done nothing, and I'm sure Google has withdrawn the app now that they are doing their own phone OS.
Come on Apple - give us a nice surprise.
WRONG. There has never been a "Google Maps App" for iOS.

As an aside, I wish they'd bring the Golf GTD over here. I would be strongly tempted to buy one.
The Golf GTD is brilliant... I think it's a better everyday car than the GTI, I test drove one (no intention of buying, but something to do on a Sunday afternoon) and its in-gear performance is proper... And it's far more sophisticated looking than the GTI too.
That said, it's a shame that VW haven't launched a Polo GTD... yet, IMHO the Polo GTI is the true spiritual successor to the MK I Golf GTI, more compact, lighter with an absolute peach of an engine... a GTD would offer comparable performance, but with extraordinary fuel efficiency. The Polo's better looking too... ;)

I wanted an app that would show me the current month and following month's calendars in a small window, for when I'm planning the next couple of week's activities. I found it as CalendarCenter (http://www.macdev.ca/macos/Freeware.html) from MacDev.ca. It's not elegant but it does just the one trick I wanted. Freeware. versiontracker page (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12219).

The Gorillaz love to experiment and Damon Albarn mentioned himself that he loves to challenge himself whist creating his works. In other words, this will not be a continuing trend. I doubt very much will other artists will follow suit.
That said: touche. I can't believe I missed that. I think I need to strike out the word impossible and put impractical.
I fully agree that this won't be a mainstream endeavour. I just had to object to the "Impossible" claim. ;)

Apple's attitude about this stuf has always been very positive. I'm totally willing to believe that all this stuff was an oversight since believing that matches what they've said in the past.
Weren't they made aware of this almost a year ago? That's a long time to address an oversight.

Bristol Fighter, yaeh!
You can have it up to 1000 bhp and still take it down the shops. If I can get one before middle age it'll be in orange, otherwise I'll have it in grey (a la Porsche Sport Classic)
Side profile isn't the best, but other than that, it's a pretty sweet looking piece. The front, in particular, is quite nice.
